About us

We are a modern medical practice based in Station View Health Centre at the heart of the local community.

Conveniently situated in the centre of Greenock directly on local road and rail routes we also have ample parking facilities and disabled access.

We are open 8.00 am – 6 pm Monday to Friday.

Outwith these hours medical care is provided by NHS 24, for which the telephone number is 111.

Medical Education

The Practice is accredited as a Training Practice.
This means that the Practice Team are involved in the essential training of junior doctors to become GPs. These junior doctors are qualified and have worked in various hospital speciality posts but in order to become specialists in Primary Care (i.e. GPs) they must complete 18 months under the close supervision of qualified GPs. Once they have fulfilled their training requirements and passed the examinations for Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners, these newly qualified GPs are able to leave the Practice and work elsewhere.

Being a Training Practice is prestigious and Practices are only granted this status after demonstrating high standards of patient care and with GPs who have been trained to train other doctors.

The Practice is also proud to be associated with the Medical School of the University of Glasgow, one of the foremost Medical Schools in the UK and the top Medical School in Scotland. Both Dr Margaret Thompson and Dr John Thompson teach students in Years 2 and 3 of the Medical Curriculum (the course which helps train future doctors). You may be asked if you would mind being seen by or with one or more medical students. Patients often report very positive experiences being directly involved with the training of future doctors, but if you would prefer to be seen alone please tell our friendly reception team or the person with whom your appointment is booked.

Disabled Access

There is good access for the disabled to all of our consultation rooms. A designated parking bay is adjacent to the surgery entrance and the surgery has a ramp and wide doors to allow for wheelchair access.
The practice also has its own wheelchair on the premises. If you or a relative need to use this when coming to the surgery, let us know and we will gladly bring this out to the car park for you if this is suitable.

Should you or a relative require assistance regarding hearing or sight impairment, please do not hesitate to ask as we are happy to help.

Patient Confidentiality

We respect your right to privacy and keep all your health information confidential and secure. It is important that the NHS keeps accurate and up-to-date records about your health and treatment so that those treating you can give you the best possible care.

This information may be used for management and audit purposes. However, it is only available to, and used by, those involved in your care. You have the right to know what information we hold about you. If you would like to see your records please contact the Practice Manager.

Similarly, we must remind patients that we will only give out information (i.e. lab test results) after confirming certain details.

Patient Rights & Responsibilities

We aim to treat our patients courteously at all times and expect our patients to treat our staff in a similarly respectful way. It is your responsibility to keep your appointments, inform us of your past illnesses, medication, hospital admissions and any other relevant details.

We welcome all people regardless of their race, gender-identity, sexuality or religion. We will not tolerate any discrimination against race, sexuality, gender-identity or religion.

Violent & Threatening Behaviour

We take seriously any threatening, verbally abusive or violent behaviour against any of our staff or patients. If a patient is violent or abusive, they will be warned to stop their behaviour. If they persist, we may exercise our right to take action to have them removed, immediately if necessary, from our list of patients. We may exercise our right to have patients acting violently or in a threatening manner removed from the premises by the Police. This is part of our commitment to a Zero Tolerance policy, widely recognised throughout the NHS.

Non-NHS services

The NHS does not pay for some of the services we provide. These include private sick notes (including those for less than seven days duration), insurance forms, holiday cancellation forms, medical reports, fitness to travel certificates, private prescriptions, passport signing and some vaccination services. Our fees for these services, which are in line with BMA approved national guidelines, are displayed in the surgery.  Please ask reception to confirm the fee before you request such a service. Fee-for-service items cannot be removed from the Practice before payment is received.
